Rolling Exercises
Rolling exercises help babies learn to roll, usually between 4 and 6 months. Rolling builds trunk strength and body awareness and is a step towards sitting and crawling.
What it does
Rolling involves coordinating the head, trunk and limbs. Practice helps babies discover the movement.
Our physiotherapists use it most often for down syndrome, cerebral palsy and infantile hemiparesis, and it features in our pediatric physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Place a toy just out of reach to one side.
- As the baby reaches, gently guide the hip or shoulder to help them roll.
- Practise to both sides.
- Reduce your help as they learn.
How much
A few times during each play session.
Stop and check with us if
- Your baby rolls only to one side or isn't rolling by 7 months.
Medical note
These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.
