Elbow, Wrist and Hand Exercises

Finger Flexion and Extension

Finger flexion and extension exercises bend the fingers into a full fist and straighten them completely. They prevent the stiffness that develops quickly after hand fractures, swelling and surgery.

What it does

Finger joints stiffen within days if they don't move. Regular full-range movement keeps tendons gliding and joints mobile.

It is a regular part of rehab plans for hand fractures, wrist fracture and trigger finger, and it features in our joint pain physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Rest your forearm on a table.
  2. Make a full fist, bending all finger joints, and hold 3 seconds.
  3. Open the hand fully, straightening all fingers, and hold 3 seconds.
  4. Block each joint separately: hold the finger below a joint and bend only that joint.

How much

10 repetitions, every 2 to 3 hours while stiffness is present.

Common mistakes

  • Not reaching full bend or straighten.
  • Skipping the blocking exercises.

Stop and check with us if

  • A finger won't straighten on its own, as in mallet finger. It may need a splint rather than exercise.

Medical note

These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

Should I exercise a finger in a splint?
Only the joints your therapist allows. Some must be kept still.
Why is my hand so swollen?
