Genu Valgum (Knock Knees) Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Genu valgum, or knock knees, is when the knees angle inward and touch while the ankles stay apart. In young children it's usually a normal stage of development. In older children and adults, it can affect how the knees and hips are loaded.
Normal development
Babies are born bow-legged. Around age two, legs often straighten, then swing into knock knees, which is usually most noticeable around three to four years. By about seven, most children's legs straighten to the adult alignment. So knock knees in a four-year-old are usually nothing to worry about.
When to get it checked
Assessment is worthwhile if knock knees are severe, getting worse after age seven, only on one side, associated with pain or limping, or if the child is unusually short. Conditions like rickets (vitamin D deficiency) and growth plate problems can cause pathological knock knees and need medical care.
Adults with knock knees
In adults, knock knees can increase load on the outer part of the knee and the kneecap joint. People may notice knee pain with running or stairs. Weak hip muscles and flat feet can make an inward knee position worse during movement, even if the bone alignment is only mildly affected.
What physiotherapy can do
Exercise doesn't change bone alignment. It can strengthen hip abductors and external rotators to improve dynamic knee position during walking, running and squatting, which often reduces pain. Foot support may help when flat feet contribute. For children with pathological causes, physiotherapy supports medical or surgical treatment.
Exercises often used for Genu Valgum (Knock Knees)
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
