Rehabilitation Exercises

Post Knee Replacement Exercises

Exercises after knee replacement restore the knee's bend and straightening, rebuild the quadriceps and get you walking normally again. The first six weeks are especially important for range of motion.

What it does

The new joint needs the muscles and soft tissues around it to move and control it. Consistent exercise determines the final result.

Our physiotherapists use it most often for total knee replacement and knee osteoarthritis, and it features in our knee pain physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Week 1 to 2: ankle pumps, quad sets, straight leg raises, heel slides and knee extension stretches.
  2. Week 2 to 6: short and long arc quads, sit to stand, walking with an aid, stairs.
  3. Week 6 onwards: step ups, mini squats, balance work, cycling.
  4. Ice and elevation help manage swelling.

How much

Exercises 2 to 3 times a day in the first weeks, then daily.

Stop and check with us if

  • Knee bend is under 90 degrees at 2 weeks or isn't improving, or there's wound concern or calf swelling.
