Why the first six weeks matter
The knee needs to bend and straighten fully, and the thigh muscles need to switch back on and strengthen. Scar tissue forms quickly, so bending that isn't pushed steadily in the first weeks becomes much harder to recover later. That's why regular sessions early on make such a difference.
Home first, then clinic
For the first few weeks, car travel is uncomfortable and tiring for most people after knee replacement. Home physiotherapy lets rehab start on time without that barrier. Once walking is comfortable, usually around four to six weeks, many people continue in the clinic for more advanced strength work.
Our guide to home physiotherapy after knee replacement explains how the home phase works.
What rehab involves
- ankle pumps, quad sets and straight leg raises from the first days
- heel slides and knee extension stretches to restore range
- walking practice, progressing from walker to stick
- stairs, sit to stand and balance
- progressive strengthening
Our post knee replacement exercises guide sets out the full plan.
Milestones
Most people aim for around 90 degrees of bend by two weeks, 110 to 120 degrees over the following weeks, walking with a stick by four to six weeks and most daily activities by three months.
Staying in touch with the surgical team
Contact your surgeon for wound concerns, fever, calf pain or swelling, or if bending stalls. Your physiotherapist will flag concerns early.
Stairs in high-rise living
Many knee replacement patients in Noida live in high-rise flats. Lifts make daily life manageable, but stairs still matter: lifts go under maintenance, power backup sometimes fails, and many societies have steps at the entrance or in the basement parking.
Rehab includes stair practice for this reason. The technique for the early weeks is "up with the good, down with the bad": lead with the non-operated leg going up and the operated leg coming down, holding the rail, one step at a time. As strength improves, the goal is to climb normally, one foot per step.
A physiotherapist visiting at home can practise on the actual stairs in your building, which is often more useful than practising on a single step in a clinic. It also makes it clear what the patient can manage safely if the lift is unavailable.
