Stroke Physiotherapy
Stroke physiotherapy at PhysioSolution is one-to-one work on the things a stroke takes away first: getting out of bed, standing steady, walking safely and using the weaker arm again, at our Indirapuram clinic or in your home.
New stroke symptoms are an emergency
Sudden face drooping, arm or leg weakness, slurred or confused speech, sudden loss of vision or balance, or a sudden severe headache can mean a new stroke. Call 112 or 108 for an ambulance straight away and note the time the symptoms started. Do not wait for a physiotherapy appointment. What to do while you wait for help.
What the physiotherapist actually works on
A stroke damages part of the brain that plans and controls movement. The muscles themselves are usually fine. What has gone wrong is the signal, so one side of the body may be weak, heavy, stiff or simply slow to respond. Physiotherapy is the practice of rebuilding that control through repeated, well-chosen movement.
In practice the work falls into a few areas. Trunk control comes first, because a person who cannot sit upright without leaning cannot stand safely. Then standing and shifting weight onto the weaker leg, then stepping and walking, which our guide to walking and balance after stroke covers in depth. Alongside this we look after the shoulder on the weak side, which is easily strained, and work on reaching, gripping and letting go with the hand (the slow, patient work described in recovering arm and hand use). Spasticity (muscles that tighten and resist stretch) needs its own attention, and we cover it in detail on our page on physiotherapy for paralysis and spasticity after stroke.
Physical therapy treatment for stroke is not a massage or a machine session. Electrical stimulation and other aids have a place, but the change happens when the person does the movement, many times, with feedback.
The first assessment and what we measure
The first session is longer than the rest. We start with the history: type of stroke, scans if you have them, the discharge summary, blood pressure readings, diabetes, heart rhythm problems and any precautions the neurologist has given. Then we look at movement.
We check how the person rolls and sits up, whether they can sit on the edge of the bed without support, how much help they need to stand, and what the weak foot does when they try to step. We test sensation, because a hand that cannot feel where it is will not be used however strong it gets. We look at the shoulder for any gap at the joint. Where it is safe, we time a short walk or count how many times they can stand up from a chair in thirty seconds.
Those numbers matter more than they seem. They give us a baseline to repeat every few weeks, so progress is measured rather than guessed. The full process is explained in our guide to the stroke rehabilitation assessment.
How a stroke physiotherapy session runs
Each session is one-to-one with a qualified physiotherapist and lasts about 45 to 60 minutes. A typical hour might begin with a few minutes of checking how the past days went: falls, pain, sleep, how much of the home programme got done. Then the main block, which is task practice. If the goal this month is getting from the bed to a chair without help, most of the session is spent on exactly that, broken into parts and rebuilt.
We end by updating the home exercises. These matter as much as the session itself. One hour with a physiotherapist twice or three times a week is a small slice of the week, and the brain responds to how often a movement is practised. A family member who learns the right way to help can multiply the effect of every visit.
Clinic sessions or home visits
Both work. The choice depends on where the person is in recovery and what the journey involves.
- Home visits suit people who are early after discharge, tire quickly, need two people to get into a car, or live in a building where getting downstairs is itself an ordeal. Practising in the real bathroom and on the real stairs has its own value. Details are on our page about home physiotherapy for stroke patients.
- Clinic sessions suit people who can travel with reasonable comfort. The clinic has equipment we cannot carry, including gym equipment for progressive strengthening and overhead track and harness therapy, which lets someone practise walking with the fear of falling taken out of the picture.
Many patients start at home and move to the clinic once the car journey is manageable. Nothing about the plan needs to restart when that happens.
Who this service is for
We see people at very different points. Some come within days of leaving hospital. Some come a year or more after the stroke because progress stopped when the last therapist left, or because a fall has knocked their confidence. Later recovery is usually slower, but it is real, and the goals simply become more specific. Our guide on what a recovery plateau really means is worth reading if this sounds familiar.
Physiotherapy for stroke patients also suits people with a mild stroke who look fine but feel unsteady on uneven ground or tire after ten minutes of walking. These problems are easy to miss and worth treating.
It is not an emergency service. If someone develops new face drooping, arm or leg weakness, slurred speech or sudden loss of balance, call 112 or 108 for an ambulance straight away. Physiotherapy can wait; stroke treatment cannot.
Working alongside the doctor and other therapists
We work within the precautions the neurologist or physician sets, and we send progress notes so the treating doctor knows what is changing. If we notice something outside our scope, such as coughing during meals, new confusion or blood pressure readings that look wrong, we tell the family and suggest they contact the doctor.
Stroke recovery often needs more than physiotherapy. Speech and swallowing problems need a speech therapist, and dressing, cooking and handwriting are core occupational therapy work. Our page on structured stroke rehabilitation explains how these pieces fit together. If the person is bed-bound and needs nursing at home as well, PhysioSolution can arrange nursing care for stroke patients.
Where we see patients: Indirapuram, Noida and Raj Nagar Extension
The clinic is in Shipra Krishna Vista Plaza, Ahinsa Khand 1, Indirapuram, close to Shanti Gopal Hospital and Jaipuria Mall. Families from Vaishali, Vasundhara and Kaushambi find it a short drive. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 9 pm and Sunday morning.
For people who cannot travel yet, home visits run across Indirapuram and Ghaziabad. In Noida, visits are scheduled in fixed slots across sectors such as 62, 63, 71, 75, 121 and 137, and evening slots fill fastest. See our Noida home physiotherapy page for coverage. In the high-rise societies of Raj Nagar Extension, first visits are usually possible within 24 hours of booking and longer courses run at a fixed weekly time.
What we can and cannot promise
We cannot promise that someone will walk again, or by when. Recovery depends on where the stroke was, how large it was, how early rehabilitation began, other health problems and how much practice happens between sessions. Two people with the same scan can recover very differently.
What we can promise is a clear plan, honest measurement, and a physiotherapist who explains why each exercise is there. If you are still deciding what kind of help you need, the stroke care hub brings all our stroke guides and services together.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your neurologist and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
How many stroke physiotherapy sessions will be needed?
There is no fixed number. After the first assessment we suggest a frequency, often three to five sessions a week in the early months, and set goals to review after four to six weeks. Some people need a few months of regular sessions; others continue at a lower frequency for much longer. We reduce visits as the person and family become more independent with the home programme.
Can a female physiotherapist be arranged?
Yes. You can request a female physiotherapist when you book, for clinic sessions or home visits. Tell us at the time of booking so we can plan the schedule, because availability for particular time slots may vary, especially for popular evening slots in Noida.
Is physiotherapy useful if the stroke happened two years ago?
Often, yes. Gains later on tend to be smaller and slower, but people still improve walking speed, balance, confidence on stairs and use of the arm in everyday tasks. We set narrow, practical goals and measure them so you can judge whether continuing is worthwhile.
Should the person rest on bad days instead of doing exercises?
Fatigue after stroke is real and should be respected, but complete rest usually makes the next day harder. On low days we shorten the session and keep to gentle practice such as sitting balance, breathing and a few transfers. If bad days become frequent, or come with new symptoms, the doctor should be told.
What should we keep ready for the first session?
Keep the discharge summary, any scan reports, the current list of medicines and a recent blood pressure record. Comfortable loose clothing and shoes with a closed back help. For home visits, a firm chair with armrests and a clear path from the bed to the bathroom make the assessment more useful.
