What happens to the discs
Spinal discs have almost no direct blood supply. They get nutrients by soaking up fluid when unloaded and pushing it out when compressed, like a sponge. Changing position keeps that exchange going. Holding one posture for hours slows it down.
Slumped sitting also increases pressure on the back of the discs compared with standing. Healthy discs cope with that easily for short periods. Over a full day, every day, the lower back can start to complain.
What happens to the muscles
When you sit still, the deep trunk muscles don't switch off, but they do the same low-level job for a long time. That's tiring in a way that doesn't feel like exercise. By late afternoon, the ache across the lower back is often muscle fatigue rather than injury.
The hip flexors at the front of the hip spend the day shortened. They adapt, and when you stand up they can tug the pelvis forward, increasing the arch of the lower back. That's one reason why standing up after a long meeting can feel stiff for the first few steps.
And the posture everyone worries about
Forward head posture comes from screens more than chairs. For every few centimetres the head drifts forward, the neck and upper back muscles work harder to hold it. Over months this can lead to the tight shoulders and headaches many desk workers describe. We cover it in more detail in tech neck.
But here's the part people don't hear often enough: there is no single correct posture. Sitting bolt upright for eight hours isn't healthier than slouching for eight hours. Both are one position held too long.
What actually helps
Movement breaks do more than any chair. Stand every 30 to 45 minutes. Walk to refill water. Take calls on your feet. A two-minute break frequently matters more than an expensive ergonomic setup.
Setup still counts. Put the top of the screen at eye level, keep the keyboard close enough that the elbows rest near your sides, and support the lower back with a small cushion if your chair has none. If you work on a laptop, a stand and a separate keyboard are the most useful purchases you can make.
Then counter the day. Five minutes in the evening of hip flexor stretches, thoracic extension over a chair and a few bridges reverses much of what the day did.
When it becomes a problem
Stiffness that eases with movement is normal. Pain that persists into the weekend, spreads into a leg or arm, or wakes you at night deserves a proper assessment. So does back pain that keeps returning every few weeks despite breaks and stretching.
Sitting is part of modern work and it isn't going away. The fix is not to fear the chair. It is to stop letting it keep you still.
