How to use this calculator
- Enter sex, age, height and weight.
- Measure your calf at its widest point, standing.
- See the low muscle mass screen and an estimate of muscle mass.
How it works
Calf circumference is the screening measure recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019): below 34 cm in men or 33 cm in women suggests low muscle mass. Muscle mass is estimated roughly from lean body mass.

Physiotherapy treatment
Strength and conditioning is the core of physiotherapy for low muscle mass / deconditioning. After an assessment, your physiotherapist sets a plan built around progressive resistance training, progressed as your results improve. Hands-on treatment, pain relief and education are added where they help.
Exercises this calculator may recommend
Your result decides which of these appear, and at what dose.
