Home Physiotherapy vs Clinic Physiotherapy: Which One Is Right for You?

Neither option is better in every case. Home and clinic physiotherapy suit different people, different conditions and different stages of recovery, and many patients use both at different times.

What the clinic offers

A clinic has space and equipment. Traction tables, electrotherapy machines, exercise equipment and room to walk, jog or practise stairs are easier to use there. For sports injuries, back pain in active adults and later-stage rehabilitation, that range of equipment helps progress.

Clinic visits also get people out of the house, which for some is part of recovery. And for those who can travel easily, a clinic is usually the more economical option.

What home physiotherapy offers

Home physiotherapy removes travel. For someone who has just had knee or hip surgery, a stroke, a fall or has severe back pain, getting to a clinic can be the hardest part of treatment. Missed sessions often come down to transport, not motivation.

The other advantage is less obvious: treatment happens where life happens. A physiotherapist at home can see the actual bed height, the bathroom threshold, the stairs and the chair the patient uses. Rehab can train those exact tasks. Our guide to what happens during a home session covers this in more detail.

Who does better at home

  • people in the first weeks after joint replacement or major surgery
  • stroke and neurological patients with limited mobility
  • older adults with fall risk or frailty
  • bedridden patients and those needing carer training
  • anyone for whom travel worsens symptoms

Who does better in the clinic

  • sports injuries needing space and equipment
  • active adults with back, neck, knee or shoulder pain
  • later-stage rehab, when strength and fitness training need more resources
  • people who can travel comfortably and prefer lower costs

Combining the two

A common pattern: start at home when mobility is limited, then move to the clinic once travel is comfortable. The same physiotherapist can often manage both stages, which keeps the plan consistent.

Cost, frequency and what actually drives results

Home visits usually cost more per session than clinic appointments, because the physiotherapist's travel time is part of the service. That leads some families to book fewer home sessions than the condition needs, which can be a false economy. Two home sessions a week that actually happen often achieve more than three clinic sessions where one is regularly missed because transport fell through.

Frequency matters most early on. After surgery or a stroke, the first weeks are when regular sessions make the biggest difference. Later, sessions can often be spaced out, with more of the work done independently.

Whatever the setting, the biggest factor in outcome is what happens between sessions. A clear home exercise plan, done consistently, is worth more than the choice of location. When comparing options, ask how the home programme will be set, checked and progressed.

Making the decision

Ask yourself two questions. Would getting to a clinic be difficult or painful right now? And does the problem involve how you manage at home? If either answer is yes, home physiotherapy is worth considering. Our home visit physiotherapy page lists the areas we cover and how sessions are booked.
