How it works

Tests follow the CDC STEADI fall-prevention toolkit and published norms: the 4-stage balance test (tandem stance under 10 seconds indicates risk), Timed Up and Go (12 seconds or more indicates risk), 30-second chair stand (below-average counts by age and sex) and single-leg stance norms by age.

Physiotherapy treatment

Functional strengthening, balance and gait training is the core of physiotherapy for reduced mobility in older adults. After an assessment, your physiotherapist sets a plan built around sit-to-stand, walking and balance exercises, progressed as your results improve. Hands-on treatment, pain relief and education are added where they help.

Exercises this calculator may recommend

Your result decides which of these appear, and at what dose.

Medical note

Calculators give estimates for general guidance and do not diagnose any condition. Stop and seek medical help for chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe or rapidly worsening pain. Always follow your surgeon's or doctor's instructions over any calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to do balance tests at home?
Yes, with a sturdy counter to hold and another person present.
Can balance really improve in older age?
Yes. Balance and strength programmes reduce falls by about a quarter.
Which exercises does the Senior Mobility Score recommend?
It matches exercises to your result. Typical suggestions are sit-to-stand, walking and balance exercises. Gentler options are shown when your result suggests pain or low capacity, and harder progressions when you are on track. A physiotherapist confirms the right exercises and dose after assessment.
