Balance, strength and falls in older parents

Most falls in older adults happen at home, often on the way to the bathroom at night. The fix is rarely one thing. It's leg strength, balance practice, the right footwear, a night light and a grab bar in the right place. Because we're already in the flat, we can check all of that during the first visit at Gardenia Glory and build a geriatric physiotherapy programme around what we find. The fall risk calculator is a useful place to start. Where bones are thin, as with osteoporosis, we choose exercises that load the bones safely rather than avoiding load altogether.

After a knee or hip replacement

Discharge after a joint replacement usually comes around day three to five, and the first two weeks at home decide a lot. The knee has to reach full straightening early, and bend past 90 degrees within a few weeks, or scar tissue starts to set the limit for you.
