Physiotherapy After Knee Replacement in Noida
The first weeks after a knee replacement bring the practical problems: a bed too low, a bathroom step, a lift out of service. Knee replacement physiotherapy in Noida starts in your flat and sorts those out first.
Who usually calls us, and when
Most calls come a day or two before discharge, from a son or daughter who works and has realised the parent coming home will need more than a printed exercise sheet. Sometimes it's the patient, a few days after getting home, because the knee isn't bending and they don't know whether to push it. Both are good moments to start. Earlier is better, mainly because swelling and stiffness are easier to handle before they settle in.
This page covers total and partial knee replacement (the knee replacement condition guide describes both operations). The later clinic-based strengthening phase is described on the page for knee rehab at our Indirapuram clinic.
Getting the flat ready before the first visit
A few changes make the first fortnight far easier, and most of them cost nothing.
- Bed height: sitting on the edge, your hips should be a little higher than your knees. A low divan or a mattress on the floor makes standing up very hard.
- Bed position: if the bed is pushed against the wall, check there is room to get out on the side we agree, with space for the walker.
- Bathroom: many flats have a 10 cm step or raised sill into the bathroom. With a walker, that step is where falls happen. A grab rail, a raised toilet seat and a plastic stool for bathing help a lot.
- Floors: lift loose rugs and keep the route from bed to bathroom clear and lit at night.
- Seating: a firm chair with armrests, not the low sofa.
We look at all of this on the first visit and suggest only what your flat actually needs. There's no point buying equipment that sits in a corner.
What the first home visit covers
The first visit runs longer than the rest because it includes a full assessment and a written plan. We check the skin around the dressing for heat and redness without disturbing it, measure how far the knee bends and straightens, look at swelling in the calf and thigh, and watch how you get from lying to standing. Then we go through the exercises picked for where you are that day, and teach the person who will be with you most how to help.
Attendant training isn't a formality. Families often lift a patient under the arm on the operated side, or hold the walker steady for them, and both make things less safe. Ten minutes on where to stand, where to put a hand, and when to simply let the person do it saves a lot of trouble later.
Bend, straighten and swelling in the first three weeks
Two measurements guide most early decisions: how straight the knee gets and how far it bends. We take a goniometer reading at each visit. You can follow it yourself with the knee range of motion calculator, though phone measurements at home are rough.
Swelling is the main brake. A puffy, tight knee won't bend however hard you work it, and forcing it usually makes the next day worse. Elevation done properly (heel supported, knee straight, no pillow under the knee), cold packs as advised and frequent ankle pumps do more in the first fortnight than any heroic stretching. The other early exercises are on the knee replacement exercise page; yours are chosen after assessment.
Lifts, stairs and the first walk downstairs
High-rise living has one advantage, lifts, and one risk: lifts stop. If your tower's lift goes for maintenance or the power backup is patchy, we practise stairs early with a rail on one side, using the rule of up with the good leg and down with the operated one until strength allows a normal pattern.
The first walk outside the flat is usually the corridor, then down to the lobby, then a slow lap of the podium or garden. Short and often beats one long walk that leaves the knee swollen for two days.
Knee replacement physiotherapy in Noida: how visits are scheduled
Visits across Noida run on scheduled slots, because travel between sectors needs planning. We regularly cover Sectors 62, 63, 71, 72, 75, 76, 121, 137 and Noida Extension, and other sectors on request; the Noida home visit page has details. Evening slots are popular with families where everyone works, so book those a day ahead.
A session lasts about 45 to 60 minutes. As an indication, a single home session is Rs 800 to 1,200, a weekly plan of 6 visits starts from Rs 4,500 and a monthly plan of 24 visits from Rs 16,000. These are indicative and confirmed when you book.
When the Indirapuram clinic becomes worth the trip
Once you can manage a car transfer comfortably and sit through the drive without the knee seizing, a few clinic sessions add what home visits can't: gym equipment for graded strengthening and more room to work on walking and stairs. Some Noida patients switch fully. Others keep home visits and come in once a week. It depends on the drive, who can bring you, and what you are working towards.
Hip patients go through a similar first-week setup with different rules about sitting and bending; the page on hip replacement rehab in Noida covers that. If the patient is recovering with family in Raj Nagar Extension instead, see knee replacement physiotherapy there. Our general approach to post-surgical rehabilitation applies throughout.
We follow your surgeon's protocol on weight-bearing and bending limits and send progress notes so the surgeon stays updated. For dressings and personal care in the first week, some families arrange post-surgery nursing at home alongside physiotherapy.
When to call the surgeon or an ambulance
Phone the surgeon if the wound turns red, hot or starts to leak, if you run a fever, or if the calf becomes painful, tight or swollen. Breathlessness that comes on suddenly, or chest pain, is an emergency: call 112 or 108 for an ambulance. Sudden severe pain in the knee, or new numbness or weakness in the foot, also needs medical review before the next session.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
Should we rent a hospital bed for the first few weeks?
Not always. If your own bed can be raised to a good height with a firmer mattress or blocks, that is often enough. An adjustable hospital bed helps more when both knees were replaced, when the person is frail or heavy, or when an attendant will be helping with most transfers. We can advise after seeing the room.
Can visits happen after 7 pm when my son is home from work?
Evening slots are available on the Noida schedule and are often the most requested, so ask a day ahead. An evening visit has a side benefit: the family member who helps at night gets trained on transfers and the bathroom route, which is when many falls happen.
Our society needs visitor approval at the gate. Will that slow things down?
It can, by a few minutes each time. Pre-approving the physiotherapist's visit on your society app, or telling the guard the expected time, keeps the session from starting late. If your tower has a separate service lift or entry, let us know at booking.
The new knee clicks when I walk. Is something wrong?
A painless click is common after knee replacement and usually comes from the implant surfaces moving against each other. It is worth mentioning to your surgeon at the next review. If the click comes with pain, swelling, a feeling of the knee giving way or locking, contact the surgeon sooner.
How long will I need home visits?
It varies with your strength before surgery, swelling, and how much help you have at home. Many people need frequent visits for the first few weeks and fewer after that. We review at each stage and reduce visits when you can do the home programme safely, rather than following a fixed number.
