Recovery at home
Physiotherapy After Knee Replacement in Raj Nagar Extension
A physiotherapist spends an hour with your knee a few days a week. The rest is up to you and your family. Knee replacement physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension is built around making those unsupervised hours count.
Most of recovery happens between sessions
Do the arithmetic. Even on a daily plan, a supervised session lasts under an hour. The knee has the other twenty-three hours to stiffen, swell or get stronger, depending on what happens in them. The people who recover well are rarely the ones who worked hardest in front of the physiotherapist. They are the ones who did the small things at home, several times a day, without being reminded.
That is the focus of this page. It covers total and partial knee replacement (see the knee replacement overview for the surgery itself). Raj Nagar Extension is served on scheduled slots, usually within 24 hours of booking, as described on our Raj Nagar Extension home visit page.
The weekly plan and why a fixed time helps
Longer courses here run as a weekly plan with a fixed time, say 10 in the morning, Monday to Saturday. That sounds like admin, but it does clinical work. Meals and any prescribed pain relief can be timed around the session as your doctor advises. The attendant knows when to be present. And the knee is checked at the same point in the day, so a change in swelling or bend actually means something.
Early on, most people need frequent visits. As the wound heals and the knee settles, the number drops and the home programme carries more of the load.
What a good home programme looks like
A programme that fits on one page gets done. One that runs to four pages doesn't. After each review we write down the exercises, the repetitions, how many times a day, and what you should feel (a stretch, or mild discomfort that settles within an hour) against what you shouldn't (sharp pain, or swelling that is worse the next morning).
The content follows the stage and is set after assessment. Early on it is usually swelling control, thigh tightening, heel slides and walking practice. Later it moves to sit-to-stand, step-ups and balance. The common post-replacement knee exercises show many of them, though your list may differ.
Tie the exercises to things that already happen: one set after morning tea, one after the afternoon rest, one during the evening news. Habits pinned to an existing routine survive. "Whenever I remember" doesn't.
The family's part, and where to step back
In the high-rise societies off NH-58 it's common for one family member to be home during the day while others commute to Delhi or Noida. That person becomes the most important member of the team. We show them how to guard a walk, how to help with sit-to-stand without pulling, and how to count repetitions without nagging.
We also tell them what not to do. Don't press on the knee to force the bend. Don't put a pillow under the knee at night for comfort, because it trains the knee to stay bent. And don't do everything for the patient. Fetching their own water bottle is part of the rehab.
Simple things to track each day
- Pain at rest and after exercise on a 0 to 10 scale; a pain progress tracker makes trends easier to spot.
- Swelling: is the knee bigger this morning than yesterday morning?
- How far you walked, in rounds of the flat or in minutes.
- Whether all the sessions on the sheet got done.
Bring this to the next visit, or send a photo of the sheet on WhatsApp. It changes what we do. If you are unsure whether a session was too much, the exercise pain monitoring tool gives a simple way to judge it, and the recovery timeline calculator shows roughly where most people are at your stage.
Knee replacement physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension: stepping down visits
We reduce visits when three things are true. You are doing the home programme reliably. The knee's range is moving the right way between visits, not only during them. And you can walk safely at home without someone beside you. Usually that means going from almost daily to three times a week, then to weekly reviews where we check, progress and rewrite the sheet.
If things slip back, for example swelling returns after a family wedding or a fall scare knocks confidence, we step up again for a while. It isn't a one-way door.
Is the drive to the clinic worth making?
The clinic is in Indirapuram, across the Hindon. From Raj Nagar Extension that means a cross-city drive and its traffic, and sitting in a car that long can leave a new knee stiff. In the first month it's rarely worth it. Later, a handful of clinic sessions can help with strength work on gym equipment and with walking practice on stairs and slopes. The page on the clinic phase in Indirapuram describes that stage, and families in Noida start much the same way at home, as covered in knee rehab in Noida.
Some households here are managing two recoveries at once; if a parent is also recovering from a hip operation, see hip replacement physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension. Our wider approach is set out under post-surgical rehabilitation. Throughout, we follow your surgeon's protocol on weight-bearing and bending, and send progress notes so the surgeon stays informed.
When to call the surgeon or an ambulance
Don't wait for the next scheduled visit if the wound becomes red, hot or starts to discharge, if you get a fever, or if the calf turns painful or swollen: call the surgeon that day. If breathing suddenly becomes hard or chest pain starts, ring 112 or 108 for an ambulance. Ring the surgeon too for sudden severe knee pain, a knee that suddenly can't take weight, or new numbness or weakness in the leg.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I miss a day of home exercises?
One missed day rarely matters; just restart the next morning at the usual level rather than doubling up to catch up. Doubling up tends to cause swelling that costs more days. If you are missing several days a week, tell us. Usually the programme is too long or badly timed, and we can fix that.
Can the fixed visit time be changed later?
Yes, within the scheduled slots for Raj Nagar Extension. Give a day or two of notice where you can. Many families move the time once the attendant changes or someone returns to work; it is better to pick a time that will hold for a few weeks than one that keeps shifting.
How do I know if I'm doing too much?
Pain that rises during exercise but settles within an hour or so is usually acceptable. Pain that is still raised the next morning, a knee that is clearly more swollen, or a bend that has gone backwards suggests the dose was too high. Note it and we will adjust the programme at the next visit.
My father won't exercise unless the physiotherapist is there. What can we do?
This is common and usually comes from fear of hurting the new knee. A shorter list, a fixed time tied to a daily routine, and a family member doing the counting all help. We can also show him his own measurements improving, which tends to work better than reminders.
