After disc surgery
Physiotherapy After Slip Disc Surgery in Raj Nagar Extension
Slip disc surgery physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension: a weekly home plan after microdiscectomy or endoscopic discectomy that keeps recovery moving between visits, with simple self-checks for sitting, leg symptoms and warning signs.
Where this page fits
This plan suits anyone recovering from removal of a herniated lumbar disc, whether done through a small open cut, under a microscope or with an endoscope. If your surgeon fused vertebrae or removed bone to widen the canal, read rehab after spinal fusion or laminectomy in Raj Nagar Extension instead. If you haven't had surgery, non-surgical treatment for a slipped disc is the better starting point, and our discectomy explainer describes the operation.
Managing the risk of a second herniation without living in fear
After a discectomy the disc's outer wall is still healing for weeks. The chance of material pushing out again is real but modest, and it should shape your habits, not freeze you. Repeated forward bending, lifting from the floor, long slumped sitting and straining are the things to limit early. Walking, on the other hand, is something most surgeons actively want you doing.
Over-protection has its own cost. People who spend the first month mostly in bed tend to come out stiffer and weaker, and then find ordinary tasks harder when the restrictions lift. The aim is plenty of safe movement, with the risky few kept out of the day.
You will probably have a bad day at some point. A flare of back soreness after doing too much is common and usually settles. Lie down in whichever position eases it, keep up short walks, and drop the programme back a level for a day or two. Write it in your log so we can see what triggered it. Leg pain clearly worse than before the operation, or new weakness, is not a flare to manage at home: that goes to the surgeon.
Slip disc surgery physiotherapy between visits
We plan Raj Nagar Extension visits in advance and can generally begin the day after you call. After discectomy, a typical week might be three visits with a set time, the programme done alone on the other days, and one rest day. Between visits you work from a short programme. Walking is the backbone, guided by our notes on a progressive walking routine. Gentle trunk exercises sit alongside it, and harder ones such as the bird dog come in later, after assessment and with the surgeon's agreement.
At each visit we check your log, test your legs, watch you do every exercise once, and change what needs changing. That last part matters. Small errors in technique creep in over a week alone, and catching them early is half the value of a visit.
A simple daily log
Three columns are enough. First, the longest stretch you sat in one go without leg symptoms. Second, total walking minutes. Third, a note on the leg: where any pain, tingling or numbness was, and whether it was more or less than yesterday. The sciatica pain tracker does a similar job if you prefer your phone.
Patterns tell us more than single days. Leg symptoms that retreat up towards the back over a week are generally a good sign. Symptoms spreading further down the leg, or a sitting limit that keeps shrinking, mean we change the plan, and you should mention it before the next visit rather than waiting.
When visits can come down
Instead of fixed dates, we use milestones. Before moving to fewer visits, we look for:
- You do the whole programme correctly without corrections from us
- You can sit through a meal and a short car ride without leg symptoms coming back
- There has been no flare needing a change in the plan for at least a week
- You know exactly what to do, and who to call, if leg pain returns
When these hold, fewer visits rarely slow things down, and the money is better spent later on progression checks.
Household jobs and family help
The weeks between two and six are when people feel better and start doing too much. In flats around Raj Nagar Extension the usual culprits are the 20 litre water can, sweeping and mopping, lifting a toddler, and a bucket of wet laundry carried to the balcony. For now these belong to someone else. Grandparents who look after small children need a plan for the day, such as sitting the child on a sofa for cuddles instead of lifting them from the floor.
Family members also help by noticing. They often spot a limp, a guarded way of sitting or a bad day before the patient admits to it.
Is the drive to Indirapuram worth it?
From here the drive is long, and sitting is the thing we limit early, so the trip rarely pays off in the first weeks. Later it can, for people heading back to heavy work, sport or gym training who need progressive loading on equipment. Read about clinic strengthening after disc surgery in Indirapuram to see what that involves, and compare with the early weeks at home after disc surgery in Noida. Booking details for this area are on our Raj Nagar Extension home visit page, and the overall method is set out in our approach to rehab after surgery.
When to call the surgeon or an ambulance
Your log helps with this too. Contact the surgeon for fever, a wound that turns red or leaks, or a sudden surge in pain. A tender, swollen calf needs a same-day check. Fresh numbness or weakness in a leg, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or losing control of the bladder or bowels needs emergency care. For sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing, call 112 or 108.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
How many times a day should I do my exercises?
It depends on your stage and how your back responds, so we set it at each visit. Spreading the programme across two or three short sessions in the day usually works better than one long one, especially early on. Walking is often split into several short bouts as well, building up as the sitting and leg symptoms allow.
My leg tingled after a long car ride. Should I worry?
A brief increase in tingling after prolonged sitting is common in the early weeks and often settles with walking and lying down. Note it in your log and reduce the next sitting block. If it doesn't settle by the next day, spreads further down the leg, or comes with weakness, contact the surgeon.
When can I sweep and mop the floor again?
Sweeping and mopping involve repeated bending and twisting, so they're usually among the last household jobs to return. When the time comes, long-handled tools and a technique that bends at the hips make a difference. We practise the movement with you before it goes back on your list, and check the surgeon has no objection.
What if the weekly visit falls on the day of my surgeon follow-up?
Tell us when you get the appointment and we'll move the visit, usually to the day after, so we can work with whatever the surgeon advised. Bring back any new instructions or restrictions, written down if possible. Changes to precautions after a follow-up are one of the main reasons the plan shifts.
