How it works

The Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) scores pain from 0 (none) to 10 (worst imaginable). Averaging current, worst and least pain gives a more stable figure than a single number. Scores of 1 to 3 are mild, 4 to 6 moderate and 7 to 10 severe.

Reading your result

0 to 3Mild pain: stay active.
4 to 6Moderate pain: pace activity; physiotherapy helps.
7 to 10Severe pain: get assessed.

Physiotherapy treatment

Pain assessment and symptom guided rehabilitation is the core of physiotherapy for pain conditions. After an assessment, your physiotherapist sets a plan built around gentle mobility, graded activity and strengthening as tolerated, progressed as your results improve. Hands-on treatment, pain relief and education are added where they help.

Exercises this calculator may recommend

Your result decides which of these appear, and at what dose.

Medical note

Calculators give estimates for general guidance and do not diagnose any condition. Stop and seek medical help for chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe or rapidly worsening pain. Always follow your surgeon's or doctor's instructions over any calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a meaningful change in pain?
A drop of 2 points or about 30 percent is considered clinically meaningful for most conditions.
Is the pain scale the same as a pain score?
Yes. Pain score, pain scale and NPRS usually refer to the same 0 to 10 rating.
Which exercises does the Pain Score Calculator (NPRS) recommend?
It matches exercises to your result. Typical suggestions are gentle mobility, graded activity and strengthening as tolerated. Gentler options are shown when your result suggests pain or low capacity, and harder progressions when you are on track. A physiotherapist confirms the right exercises and dose after assessment.
