Recovery at home
Physiotherapy After Hip Replacement in Raj Nagar Extension
Most of a hip replacement recovery happens with no physiotherapist in the room. Hip replacement physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension pairs scheduled home visits with a home programme and family routine that keep the hip improving between them.
How a hip recovery drifts off course
Early wins come fast with a hip. Arthritis pain often goes almost at once, and walking with a frame becomes easy within days. Then progress quietly stalls. The limp stays. The stick never gets put down. The person sits more, because sitting is comfortable now. None of it looks like a problem until months later, when a flight of stairs or a family wedding turns out to be too much.
That drift happens between visits, and it's what this page deals with. It applies to planned total hip replacement and to hemiarthroplasty after a fractured hip.
Setting up the weekly plan
Raj Nagar Extension is covered on scheduled slots, usually within 24 hours of booking (see our home physiotherapy page for Raj Nagar Extension). Longer courses run as a weekly plan at a fixed time. With hips, visits are usually most frequent while precautions are strict and the person is still learning to move safely, then they thin out.
Each visit has the same shape: check how the past days went, test what has changed, move the exercises on, and update the written sheet. The sheet is the bit that keeps working after we leave.
Fitting the home programme into the day
Exercises that need a mat on the floor and half an hour don't get done. Ones that slot into the day do. A typical early arrangement looks like this: ankle pumps, buttock squeezes and heel slides (as your precautions allow) in bed before getting up; a few standing exercises holding the kitchen counter while the tea brews; a walking lap of the flat after each meal. The full set, with pictures, is on the post hip replacement exercises page, but your version is set after assessment.
Precautions apply to home exercises too. Please don't add exercises from videos, however gentle they look. A posture that's fine for one approach can be off limits for another.
What the family should watch
Ask a family member to watch you walk from behind once a day. They're looking for three things: the pelvis dipping on the non-operated side, the body leaning over the operated hip, and one step shorter than the other. Any of these means the hip muscles aren't keeping up, and it's worth telling us.
They can also spot precaution slips you don't notice yourself: perching on the low stool in the balcony, crossing legs while watching TV, bending to plug in a phone charger. A quiet reminder at the time works better than a list of rules at night.
The step from frame to stick is where families most often jump ahead. A stick usually goes in the hand opposite the operated hip, which surprises people, because that is the side that takes load off the weak muscles. Holding it on the wrong side, or switching to it before the surgeon allows, tends to bring the limp back. We set the timing and check the stick's height on a visit.
Measuring progress at home
- Time a walk along your corridor once a week, same distance, same aid. The gait speed calculator turns that into a number you can compare.
- Count how many times you can stand up from a firm chair, without using your hands if allowed, in 30 seconds.
- Note how far you walk without the stick, if the surgeon has allowed you to try.
- Record pain before and after the programme on a 0 to 10 scale.
For older patients, the senior walking speed calculator gives a fairer comparison than one built for younger adults, and the hip recovery calculator sets out common timelines.
Hip replacement physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension: reducing visits
We start reducing visits when you understand and keep your precautions without reminders, walk safely at home with a stick or less, do the programme on most days, and have steady balance during turns. Typically that moves you from frequent visits to three a week, then weekly reviews. At this stage the work shifts towards balance training and single-leg strength, which can carry on at home for months.
If something sets you back, such as a chest infection, a fall scare or a long trip, we increase visits again for a while rather than letting the gap grow.
The clinic trip: when it's worth the drive
From Raj Nagar Extension to the clinic in Indirapuram means crossing the Hindon, and in traffic that's a long sit for a new hip. With precautions, use a firm cushion, keep the seat back, and get out and stand for a minute when you arrive before walking in. In the first six weeks it's rarely worth it. Later, a few clinic sessions with weights and step platforms can clear a stubborn limp faster than home work alone; the page on the Indirapuram clinic phase explains what happens there. For flat set-up in the first weeks, see hip rehab in Noida.
If a knee has been replaced in the same family, the page on knee recovery in Raj Nagar Extension follows the same approach. Our broader approach to rehabilitation after surgery applies to both, and we work to your surgeon's protocol and share progress notes throughout.
When to call the surgeon or an ambulance
Get urgent medical help, without trying to straighten or move the leg, if there is sudden severe hip pain with the leg looking shorter or turned and you can't stand on it. Call the surgeon the same day for fever, a red, hot or leaking wound, or a painful swollen calf. Chest pain or breathlessness that comes on suddenly is a reason to call 112 or 108 for an ambulance. Ring the surgeon too for new numbness or weakness in the leg.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
How long do hip precautions last?
Your surgeon sets the period, and it varies with the approach used and the surgeon's own practice. It is commonly several weeks. Don't drop precautions on your own because the hip feels fine; feeling fine is not the same as the tissues having healed. Ask at the follow-up appointment and tell us the answer.
Is it okay if the hip aches after the home exercises?
A mild ache in the muscles that settles within an hour or so is common and usually fine. A sharp pain in the joint, an ache that's still there the next morning, or a walk that is worse than the day before suggests the dose was too much. Write it down and we'll adjust the programme.
Can a different family member be trained if the main helper changes?
Yes. In many homes the person who is free during the day changes as people go back to work. Tell us before the change and we'll plan a visit when the new helper is present, so they can practise transfers, walking support and precautions with us watching rather than learning from a phone video.
When can I stop using the walking stick?
When you can walk without it with no lean over the hip and no dip of the pelvis, and your surgeon is happy for you to try. We usually test it indoors first, then on the corridor, then outside. Many people keep the stick for crowds, uneven ground or long distances for a while longer.
