After joint surgery
Physiotherapy After Joint Replacement in Indirapuram
Shoulder, elbow and ankle replacements, revision operations and two joints done together each recover in their own way. Joint replacement physiotherapy in Indirapuram starts with home visits and moves to the clinic for the strength and control these joints need.
Which replacements this page covers
Knee and hip replacements are the most common, and each has its own page: knee replacement rehab in Indirapuram and hip replacement rehab in Indirapuram. This page is for the rest: shoulder replacement (anatomic or reverse), elbow replacement, ankle replacement, revision of an earlier replacement, and bilateral surgery where two joints are replaced together or close together.
These operations are less common, and that matters. Fewer physiotherapists see them often, and protocols vary a great deal between surgeons. We work from your operative notes and your surgeon's protocol for that joint, not from a generic template.
Shoulder replacement: protect first, strengthen later
The two main types behave differently. An anatomic shoulder replacement copies the normal joint and relies on the rotator cuff, and the front cuff tendon is often detached and repaired during surgery. So early on, surgeons commonly limit turning the arm outwards and pushing up from a chair with that hand. A reverse shoulder replacement swaps the ball and socket and leans on the deltoid instead. Here some surgeons restrict the hand-behind-the-back movement early, because that position puts the joint most at risk.
Either way the order is similar: a sling for a period the surgeon sets, gentle assisted movement, then active movement, and only later strengthening with bands and weights. Rushing the strength phase is the commonest mistake. If your shoulder had worn out from long-standing shoulder arthropathy, expect the muscles around it to be weaker than you think. The shoulder surgery recovery calculator gives a rough sense of timelines.
Elbow and ankle replacements
Elbow replacement is often done for rheumatoid arthritis or after a complex fracture in an older person. Many surgeons set a lifelong lifting limit for the operated arm, so rehab aims at useful movement (hand to mouth, hand to the back of the head, getting a shirt on) rather than heavy strength. Losing the last bit of straightening is common, and we work on it early. Tingling in the ring and little fingers after elbow surgery can come from irritation of the ulnar nerve, which runs close by; mention it to the surgeon rather than waiting for it to pass.
Ankle replacement usually means a period in a cast or boot with limited or no weight through the foot. Swelling lingers for months, often worse by evening. When the surgeon allows weight-bearing, the work turns to walking again without a limp, calf strength and balance on uneven ground. The ankle surgery recovery calculator shows typical stages.
Revision and bilateral surgery
A revision replaces an implant that has loosened, worn or become infected. The operation is usually longer, sometimes involves bone grafting, and often comes with stricter limits on weight-bearing or movement. Muscles that have been through two operations are weaker, so progress is slower, and that's expected, not a sign that something has gone wrong.
When a revision is done for infection, it sometimes happens in two stages, with a temporary spacer in the joint for weeks or months between operations. Rehab in that gap is limited and practical: keeping the person moving safely, keeping the rest of the body strong, and protecting the joint within tight limits, so they reach the second operation in good shape.
Bilateral surgery removes the good side. With both knees or both hips done, there is no strong leg to push up from, so transfers are harder and the first weeks need more help at home. These patients generally stay on home visits longer before the clinic makes sense.
Joint replacement physiotherapy in Indirapuram: the clinic phase
For the first weeks, our home physiotherapists in Indirapuram work with portable TENS, cold packs, a muscle stimulator and therapy bands. Once the trip is easy (from Vaishali, Vasundhara or Kaushambi it's short), the clinic offers what the later phase needs: gym equipment for graded loading, overhead pulleys and weights for shoulder work, and space for balance and walking practice after ankle surgery. Band work like the resistance band shoulder routine carries on at home between sessions.
Not every machine suits a metal implant. Shortwave diathermy, for example, is generally avoided over a replaced joint. We choose treatments with the implant in mind, and most of the work is active exercise anyway. The joint replacement exercise collection shows the kinds of movements involved.
The usual arc, from home to clinic
First 2 to 3 weeks
Home visits. Protecting the joint as the surgeon instructs, swelling control, gentle movement, safe transfers and family training.
Weeks 3 to 8
Assisted then active movement, sling or boot weaned as the surgeon allows. The first clinic sessions for those who can travel comfortably.
Weeks 8 to 16
Mostly clinic. Strength, control and function, progressed in small measured steps.
After that
A home programme to maintain gains, with occasional reviews. Revision and bilateral cases often run longer at every stage.
Working with your surgeon
We follow your surgeon's protocol on slings, boots, weight-bearing and movement limits, and send progress notes after reviews. Medicine questions go to your doctor. Families recovering further away can see joint replacement rehab in Noida and joint replacement rehab in Raj Nagar Extension, and our overall approach is described under post-surgical rehabilitation.
When to call the surgeon or an ambulance
Contact the surgeon promptly for fever, a wound that is red, hot or leaking, sudden severe pain in the operated joint, or new numbness, tingling or weakness in the hand or foot. A painful swollen calf needs the surgeon the same day. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency: call 112 or 108. After a shoulder replacement, a sudden clunk with loss of movement also needs urgent review.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
Is rehab after a reverse shoulder replacement different from a standard one?
Yes, in the details. A reverse shoulder relies on the deltoid rather than the rotator cuff, so the early limits and the order of strengthening differ, and some surgeons restrict reaching behind the back for a period. The overall sequence of protect, move, then strengthen is similar. We follow your surgeon's specific protocol.
My old knee replacement was revised. Will rehab be the same as the first time?
Usually slower and more cautious. Revision surgery is often more extensive, the muscles have been through two operations, and there may be stricter weight-bearing limits. Expect each stage to take longer. If the knee itself is the only joint involved, the knee replacement page has more detail on knee-specific work.
Can I come to the clinic if both knees were replaced together?
Eventually, yes. Most people with both knees done need home visits for longer, because transfers and car travel are much harder without a stronger leg. Once you can get in and out of a car and walk safely with a stick or frame, the clinic becomes useful for strengthening both legs evenly.
Will I be able to lift things normally after an elbow replacement?
Often not heavy things. Many surgeons advise a permanent limit on how much the operated arm lifts, to protect the implant. Everyday tasks such as eating, grooming and dressing are the main goals and are usually achievable. Ask your surgeon for your exact limit and we'll plan around it.
