Recovery at home

Physiotherapy After Joint Replacement in Raj Nagar Extension

With a shoulder, elbow or ankle replacement, the quiet days between physiotherapy visits decide most of the progress. Joint replacement physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension combines scheduled visits, a written home plan and family support to keep it moving.

Joints this page covers

This page is about shoulder, elbow and ankle replacements, revision surgery and bilateral replacements. For a single knee or hip, the dedicated pages on knee replacement rehab in Raj Nagar Extension and hip replacement rehab in Raj Nagar Extension are more useful. Visits here run on scheduled slots, usually within 24 hours of booking, as set out on our Raj Nagar Extension home visit page.

Why upper-limb replacements stall at home

Shoulder and elbow patients tend to go wrong in one of two opposite ways. Some barely use the arm at all. They keep the sling on longer than needed, avoid every movement in case it hurts, and the shoulder stiffens. Others feel fine by week three and start lifting a bucket, pulling themselves up in bed or reaching for the top shelf, well ahead of what the surgeon has allowed.

Both happen between visits, and both are easier to prevent than to fix. The answer is a clear written list of what to do and what not to do yet, updated as the surgeon's limits change.

Elbows have their own version of the problem. The last part of straightening is lost quietly if the arm spends all day bent across the body or resting in the lap. Resting it straighter on a pillow for spells during the day, where the surgeon allows, protects that range far more easily than trying to win it back later.

Building the weekly plan around the joint

Longer courses run as a weekly plan with a fixed time, but the pattern differs by joint. A shoulder replacement usually needs frequent visits early, because assisted movement has to be guided and progressed carefully. An ankle replacement is often the reverse: while the foot is non-weight-bearing there's less to progress, so visits can be fewer, then increase once loading starts and walking has to be retrained. Bilateral and revision cases usually need more visits throughout, partly because helpers tire. When both legs are recovering, one person doing every transfer for weeks will flag, so we plan the visit time around when a second helper is home.

As an indication, a weekly plan of 6 home visits starts from Rs 4,500 and a monthly plan of 24 visits from Rs 16,000, with single sessions at Rs 800 to 1,200. Prices are indicative and confirmed when you book.

A home programme the family can supervise

A family member doesn't need to be a therapist to help. They need to know three things: what the exercises are, how many, and what good form looks like. For a shoulder, that might mean watching for the shoulder hitching up towards the ear during a table slide, or making sure pendulum swings stay relaxed. For an ankle, it might mean checking the foot is raised above heart level during rest periods and that ankle movements are done slowly, if the surgeon has allowed them.

Just as important is what helpers shouldn't do. Don't lift or push the operated arm further than the programme says, even if the patient asks. Don't remove a boot or splint the surgeon wants kept on. The exercises themselves, such as gentle shoulder isometrics in the middle stage, are chosen after assessment; the joint replacement exercise guide shows the general types.

Signs you're on track, and signs you're not

  • Movement: measured roughly once a week with the shoulder range of motion calculator or the ankle range of motion calculator, always in the same position.
  • Swelling: an ankle that is bigger each evening than the evening before is a warning sign, not a normal day.
  • Function: can you comb your hair, reach the second shelf, walk to the lift lobby? Small real tasks tell more than numbers.
  • Pain after exercise: settling within an hour is usually fine; still raised next morning means ease off and tell us.

A rehabilitation progress tracker keeps all of this in one place, and a photo of it on WhatsApp before a visit saves time in the session.

Joint replacement physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension: stepping down

Visits are reduced once the home programme is being done reliably, movement keeps improving between sessions, and the person is safe at home within their limits. Most move from frequent visits to two or three a week, then to weekly or fortnightly reviews where we progress the programme. Upper-limb patients often reach this point sooner than ankle or bilateral cases.

The drive to Indirapuram, and when it pays

The clinic is in Indirapuram, across the Hindon. For a shoulder or elbow patient, the drive itself is fine once the sling is off, and the clinic's weights and pulleys can speed up the strengthening phase. For an ankle patient it's worth it once walking is allowed and they need space to retrain it. In the early weeks, staying home is almost always the better use of effort. The page on the Indirapuram clinic phase describes what happens there, and joint replacement rehab in Noida covers setting up a flat in the first weeks. How we handle surgery recovery more broadly is explained under post-surgical rehabilitation.

Throughout, we follow your surgeon's protocol and send progress notes after reviews.

When to call the surgeon or an ambulance

Don't wait for the next visit if the wound turns red, hot or starts to leak, if a fever develops, or if the calf becomes painful and swollen: call the surgeon that day. For sudden breathlessness or chest pain, call an ambulance on 112 or 108. Fingers or toes that go numb, pale or blue, a cast that feels suddenly tight, or sudden severe pain in the new joint also need urgent medical advice.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can the sling come off for good?

Your surgeon decides, based on the type of shoulder replacement and how the repair was done. It is commonly several weeks. Taking it off early because the shoulder feels comfortable can strain the healing tissues. Once it comes off, the arm will feel heavy and weak for a while, which is normal and improves with the programme.

The ankle swells every evening. Is that normal months after surgery?

Some evening swelling after an ankle replacement is common for many months, especially after a busy day on your feet. It should go down overnight with the foot raised. If it's getting worse week by week, is painful, hot or red, or the calf is also swollen, contact your surgeon.

Can my teenage son help with my exercises?

Yes, if he is sensible and has been shown what to do. We prefer to train helpers in person during a visit, so they see what correct form looks like and what to avoid. Simple tasks like counting, timing and reminding are well within a teenager's reach; physically supporting a transfer may need an adult.

Is it worth coming to the clinic once a week instead of home visits?

It can be, in the later phase, if the drive is comfortable and someone can bring you. A weekly clinic session with equipment, plus a solid home programme, suits many shoulder and ankle patients once the early restrictions ease. We can plan a mix of home and clinic sessions.
