Physiotherapy After Joint Replacement in Noida
A sling, a boot or two new joints at once each change what a flat needs in the first weeks home. Joint replacement physiotherapy in Noida begins with home visits that adapt the flat, the routine and the attendant's role to the joint.
Who this page is for
If you've had a knee or hip replaced, go to the dedicated pages for knee replacement recovery in Noida or hip replacement recovery in Noida; they go into much more detail on those joints. This page covers shoulder, elbow and ankle replacements, revision surgery, and bilateral operations where two joints were replaced together, during the first weeks after discharge to a flat.
One arm out of action: shoulder and elbow replacement at home
Living one-handed in a flat takes planning. Shirts with front buttons or kurtas a size larger, with the operated arm going in first and coming out last. Lift buttons, door latches and the gas knob all done with the other hand, so check the kitchen layout before you try to cook. Many people find lying flat uncomfortable after shoulder surgery and sleep better semi-reclined with a pillow supporting the arm, if the surgeon agrees.
The attendant often needs to help take the sling off for washing and dressing, keeping the arm supported against the body and within the limits the surgeon has given. We teach this on the first visit, because doing it wrong once can hurt for days.
Watch the hand as well as the shoulder. Fingers held still in a sling for days can swell and stiffen, which then makes everything harder. Unless the surgeon says otherwise, keep the fingers and wrist moving through the day, and rest the hand slightly higher than the elbow when sitting.
After elbow replacement, the wound is usually at the back of the elbow, so leaning on it (on a table, the bed or an armrest) is uncomfortable and best avoided. Pushing up from a chair with that hand is usually off limits early on. We track the bend with the elbow range of motion calculator from week to week.
Ankle replacement: weeks off the foot
Most ankle replacements start with a period of little or no weight through the foot, in a cast or boot. Hopping with a walker sounds simple but is exhausting and risky, particularly for older people or anyone with weak arms. In a flat, a wheelchair for longer distances (bedroom to living room, say) can save energy for the exercises that matter. The weight-bearing calculator helps make sense of terms like partial or toe-touch weight-bearing when the surgeon allows it.
The bathroom is the hardest room. A shower chair, a hand shower and a waterproof cover for the cast or boot make bathing safe. Keep the foot raised for set periods each day to control swelling. If the lift is unreliable, plan what happens on a follow-up day, because getting down several floors on one leg is a serious undertaking. If the ankle surgery was a fusion or fracture fixation rather than a replacement, the page on ankle surgery rehab in Noida fits better.
Two joints at once
Bilateral surgery means there is no good side. Getting up from bed with both knees or both hips sore needs a different technique and, in the first days, often two helpers or one well-trained one. Attendant training is heavier for these families. Some arrange post-surgery nursing care for nights in the first week or two so the family isn't doing everything alone. A commode chair beside the bed for the first few nights also cuts out the riskiest walk of the day.
Revision surgery at home
A revision is usually a bigger operation than the first replacement. Expect stricter weight-bearing or movement limits, more tiredness, and slower progress. The wound may take longer to settle, so we watch it at every visit. Families sometimes worry when a revision patient lags behind a neighbour who had a first-time replacement. That comparison isn't fair, and it doesn't mean things are going badly.
Joint replacement physiotherapy in Noida: how visits are arranged
Visits run on scheduled slots across Noida sectors and Noida Extension, as listed on our Noida societies page. Evening slots suit working families and are best booked a day ahead. Sessions last about 45 to 60 minutes, and the first one includes the assessment and a written plan.
If the patient would prefer a woman for help with dressing and bathing routines, a female physiotherapist at home can be requested at booking. Exercises are chosen after assessment; the joint replacement exercise page shows the general types.
When the trip to Indirapuram makes sense
Timing differs by joint. Shoulder and elbow patients can often travel sooner than knee or ankle patients, because their legs work normally. The seatbelt and bumpy roads are the main nuisance, so a small cushion between the belt and the arm helps. Ankle patients usually wait until they can bear weight. Bilateral and revision patients wait longest. The page on the clinic phase in Indirapuram explains what the clinic adds, and families in Raj Nagar Extension can read about keeping joint replacement progress going between visits. For our overall approach, see post-surgical rehabilitation.
We follow your surgeon's protocol throughout and send progress notes after reviews.
When to call the surgeon or an ambulance
Call the surgeon for a wound that becomes red, hot or leaks, a fever, a cast or boot that suddenly feels too tight, or new numbness, tingling or colour change in the fingers or toes. So does a calf that turns sore and puffy, since that can be a clot. If breathlessness or chest pain appears suddenly, skip the surgeon and call 112 or 108 for an ambulance. Sudden severe pain in the new joint, or a sense that it has slipped, needs urgent review.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
Can the sling come off for a bath?
Often yes, but only as your surgeon allows and with the arm kept still and supported against the body. Many people find it easiest to sit on a stool and have someone help. We go through the routine on a visit so the attendant can do it safely when we're not there. Don't start moving the arm actively in the shower unless that's been cleared.
My ankle replacement is non-weight-bearing. Do I need a wheelchair at home?
Not always, but it often helps. Hopping with a walker is tiring and puts a lot of load on the arms and the other leg. A wheelchair for longer trips inside the flat saves energy and reduces fall risk. We can assess the space, doorways and the bathroom on the first visit before you rent or buy one.
Both knees were replaced together. How many visits a week will I need?
Usually more than for a single knee in the early weeks, because transfers and walking are harder and swelling affects both legs. The exact number depends on your strength, help at home and the surgeon's protocol. We review it every week or two and reduce visits as you become safer.
Can you work alongside a nurse who already visits us?
Yes. If a nurse is handling dressings, injections or personal care, we coordinate timing so sessions don't clash with wound care and the patient isn't exhausted. We can also show the nurse the transfer methods and positions we're using so everyone does it the same way.
