After surgery
Physiotherapy After Shoulder Surgery in Noida
Shoulder surgery physiotherapy in Noida for the weeks after discharge, when the arm is in a sling and the flat suddenly feels built for two hands. We visit on scheduled slots, set up the home and train whoever is helping.
The sling changes everything at home
Coming home from shoulder surgery is mostly a problem of living one-handed. Buttons, a pressure cooker lid, a tap that needs two hands, getting a kurta over the head: all of it suddenly needs a plan. The repair itself is protected by the sling, often for several weeks after a rotator cuff repair or a stabilisation, and the surgeon will usually want it worn while sleeping too. That's the part people find hardest.
Pain in this period is usually worst on days three to ten, when the nerve block from surgery has fully worn off and the arm has been still for long stretches. Cold packs over a thin cloth for short spells, a well-fitted sling and frequent elbow and hand movement all help. Medicines are your surgeon's department, and we don't change them.
Sleep deserves its own mention. Lying flat lets the elbow sink behind the body, which pulls on the front of the shoulder. Many patients in the first fortnight sleep better propped up against the headboard with three pillows, or in a recliner if the flat has one, with a folded towel under the elbow so the arm sits slightly forward. We set this up on the first visit because a person who hasn't slept for three nights won't do their exercises well either.
Setting up a high-rise flat for one arm
Most of our shoulder patients in Noida live in society towers, and the flat itself creates small, fixable problems. A few we check on the first home visit:
- Which side of the bed you get out from. Rolling towards the operated side is usually wrong in the early weeks, so the bed may need to move away from the wall.
- The bathroom. A plastic stool in the shower, a handheld shower head and a long-handled sponge make bathing possible without lifting the arm. Wet floors and one free hand are a poor combination.
- Kitchen shelves. Things used daily come down to counter height so nobody reaches overhead.
- Lifts and doors. Heavy fire doors on landings are often pushed with the shoulder. Ask someone to hold them for the first weeks.
- Clothing. Front-opening shirts, operated arm in first and out last.
What early home visits actually involve
The physiotherapist starts with the discharge summary and the surgeon's protocol, because what's allowed after a cuff repair is very different from what's allowed after a decompression. Then the session usually covers pendulum swings if permitted (the pendulum exercise lets gravity move the arm without the muscles working), therapist-guided passive movement within set limits, elbow, wrist and grip work, and shoulder blade setting. Ice and portable TENS from the visit kit may be used to settle pain before or after.
Attendant training is a large part of these visits. A family member who has been shown how to support the arm correctly can help with daily passive movement if the surgeon allows it. One who hasn't been shown tends to grip the wrist and lift, which is exactly what we don't want. If the person also needs dressing changes or medicine help, nursing support after surgery can be arranged alongside.
How the plan differs between operations
Rotator cuff repair
The tendon is stitched to bone and needs time. Early weeks are passive only. Lifting the arm with its own muscles too soon is the main thing we guard against, which is why progress feels slow and is meant to. The cuff rehabilitation exercise page shows the later progressions.
Stabilisation and Latarjet
Outward rotation is limited for a period, because that is the position the shoulder used to dislocate in. Movement in other directions often returns faster than after cuff repair.
Shoulder replacement
After a reverse replacement, reaching the hand behind the back (to tuck in a shirt or use the toilet) is often restricted early. After an anatomical replacement, the front tendon repair limits outward rotation. For people whose replacement followed long-standing shoulder arthropathy, the other shoulder and the neck are often stiff too, and we account for that.
Shoulder surgery physiotherapy in Noida on scheduled slots
We run Noida visits on planned routes, so slots are fixed in advance rather than on the hour you call. Sectors we cover regularly include 62, 63, 71, 72, 75, 76, 121, 137 and Noida Extension. Evening slots fill quickly because working family members want to be home to learn the attendant routine, so it helps to book them a day ahead. More detail on visits inside Noida societies and our wider Noida home-visit service is on the area pages.
After the sling comes off: home or clinic?
Once the sling is off and active movement starts, the question becomes whether to keep going at home or travel to the Indirapuram clinic. Home visits can carry you a long way with bands and body-weight loading. A clinic trip starts to make sense when the shoulder needs heavier, measured strengthening, or when you're aiming for overhead work or sport. It is a longer drive from most Noida sectors, so some people do a mix: home visits on weekdays, the clinic on Saturday. The clinic-based shoulder programme in Indirapuram explains that phase, and the shoulder recovery estimate tool can help you plan.
Our general post-operative rehabilitation page covers surgery types beyond the shoulder, and families farther east can compare shoulder physiotherapy in Raj Nagar Extension.
When to call the surgeon or an ambulance
Call your surgeon the same day if the wound becomes red, hot or starts to ooze, if you develop a fever, or if your fingers turn pale, cold or newly numb. A sudden jump in pain, especially after a fall or a jerk of the arm, also needs a call. Pain and swelling in the calf needs urgent review. If breathing suddenly becomes difficult or there is chest pain, call 112 or 108 immediately.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.
Frequently asked questions
Can my physiotherapist help me take a bath safely after shoulder surgery?
We don't bathe patients, but we do plan how bathing will work. That usually means a stool, a handheld shower, keeping the dressing dry as your surgeon instructs, and a way to wash the armpit on the operated side without lifting the arm. If hands-on help with personal care is needed, a nursing attendant can be arranged.
Is an evening slot available after office hours in Noida?
Evening slots are available on our scheduled Noida routes and are the most requested, because family members want to attend and learn the routine. Booking a day ahead gives the best chance of getting the time you want. Weekday daytime slots are easier to find if your attendant is at home during the day.
My father keeps taking the sling off because it is uncomfortable. What should we do?
First check that the sling fits: the forearm should be supported up to the wrist and the elbow should not hang. A small towel under the strap at the neck helps. If he still removes it, we explain to him why it matters for his particular repair. Ask the surgeon whether brief removal for washing or elbow exercises is permitted.
Do you bring any equipment to the flat?
Yes. The visit kit includes portable TENS, hot and cold packs, therapy bands and a goniometer for measuring movement, among other items. For the sling phase very little equipment is needed. Most of the useful changes are to furniture position, pillows and daily routine.
How many home visits a week are usual in the first month?
It depends on the operation and how much help is available at home. Two to three visits a week is common early on, with the attendant doing permitted daily exercises in between. We adjust the frequency after the first visit and again when the surgeon allows active movement.
