Physiotherapy After Fracture Surgery in Noida

Physiotherapy after fracture surgery in Noida for the weeks straight after discharge, when a walker, a weight-bearing order and a high-rise flat all have to start working together. We visit on scheduled slots across sectors.

The first days home after a fixed fracture

Discharge often happens sooner than families expect, sometimes two or three days after a plate or nail. The person arrives home with a walker or crutches, a weight-bearing instruction on the discharge sheet that nobody fully understands, and a flat that suddenly has too many thresholds. Fracture surgery physiotherapy in Noida for us mostly starts here, in these first weeks, with home visits that turn the instructions into a routine that works in your own rooms.

The first visit reads the discharge summary carefully. Which bone, what fixation, and above all the weight-bearing order and any movement limits. A hip fracture in an eighty-year-old treated with a partial replacement may be allowed full weight straight away. A tibial plateau fracture in a forty-year-old may be non-weight-bearing for weeks. Same household problems, opposite instructions.

Lifts, thresholds and the walker

Society towers bring their own hazards. Lift doors close faster than someone on a walker can move, and the small gap at the lift floor catches walker legs. We practise lift entry on the first visit: someone holds the door, the frame goes in first, then the good leg. When lifts are down for maintenance, the stairs become a real question, so we teach the stair pattern with crutches or a rail early, even if it's only needed once a month.

Inside the flat, the usual troublemakers are the raised strip at the bathroom door (often 5 to 10 cm), loose rugs, and a balcony door with a track. A rubber ramp or simply removing the rug can make more difference than any exercise in week one. If someone has had a hip fracture, the fall risk check is a useful starting point for the family, since one fall often signals a risk of another.

Bed, toilet and chair heights

Low seating is the hidden problem after leg fractures. Getting up from a low sofa or an Indian-style toilet puts the knee and hip through a large range under load. A raised toilet seat or commode chair, a firm chair with arms, and a bed at roughly knee height make standing far easier and safer. We measure these against the patient, not against a standard, because a tall man and a short woman need different heights.

What early home sessions focus on

The early sessions are about circulation, joints and safe movement, not strength. That usually means calf pumping (the ankle pump exercise is simple and important for blood flow after leg surgery), thigh tightening, gentle movement of the joints above and below the fracture as permitted, and walking practice with the aid at the right weight-bearing level. Swelling is managed with elevation and cold packs. Portable TENS may help for pain.

Over the next weeks the exercises progress in line with X-ray healing, following our post-fracture exercise progressions. The pace is set by the surgeon's review, so we check what was said at each follow-up.

Night deserves a plan of its own. Many falls after leg surgery happen on the way to the toilet at 3 am, half asleep, without switching on a light and without the walker. A night light along the route, the walker parked within reach of the bed, and a urinal or commode by the bed for the first weeks remove most of that risk. We go through this with the person who sleeps nearest the patient.

Upper limb and lower limb fractures need different help

With a leg fracture, the whole household rearranges around mobility. With an arm fracture, the person can walk but can't manage half of daily life one-handed. For a plated elbow fracture, stiffness sets in fast and early permitted movement matters a great deal. For upper arm and shoulder fractures, sleeping, dressing and bathing need the same planning as after shoulder surgery, which is covered in our Noida shoulder surgery home rehab page. Hip fractures in older people sit in a category of their own, see hip fracture recovery.

One thing families miss with leg fractures: the arms do a lot of work. Pushing up on a walker dozens of times a day tires the shoulders and wrists, especially in older people, and sore wrists quietly stop them walking. We add simple arm and grip strengthening early so the walker stays usable.

Fracture surgery physiotherapy in Noida: scheduled visits and evening slots

Noida visits run on scheduled slots, planned across sectors including 62, 63, 71, 72, 75, 76, 121, 137 and Noida Extension. Evening slots are the most requested because an adult child often wants to be there to learn transfers and walking support, so book them a day ahead where you can. The Noida home physiotherapy page has more about coverage. If the patient also needs wound care or help with injections, home nursing after surgery can run alongside physiotherapy.

When the Indirapuram clinic becomes worthwhile

Once the surgeon allows full weight and the person can get in and out of a car comfortably, the strengthening phase opens up, and the clinic's gym equipment, step training and balance work start to pay for the travel. That's usually weeks into recovery, not days. Our clinic-based fracture rehabilitation page describes that stage. Families in Ghaziabad can compare the Raj Nagar Extension weekly fracture plan, and our rehabilitation after surgery page covers other operations.

When to call the surgeon or an ambulance

Phone the surgeon the same day for a fever, a wound that becomes red or wet, or pain that is suddenly much worse rather than slowly better. After any fall onto the operated limb, get it checked before resuming exercises. Calf pain, tightness or swelling, especially in one leg, needs urgent medical review. Sudden shortness of breath or chest pain is an emergency: call 112 or 108.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Should we rent a hospital bed after a hip or leg fracture?

Not always. If the existing bed is firm, at roughly knee height for the patient and can be approached from the correct side, it may be enough. A hospital bed helps when the person cannot sit up independently or needs long periods in bed. We assess this on the first visit before you spend money.

Which walking aid is right after leg fracture surgery?

It depends on the weight-bearing order, balance and arm strength. A walker suits most older adults and anyone non-weight-bearing who is unsteady. Crutches suit younger, steadier people and are easier on stairs. Hospitals sometimes send people home with an aid that is set at the wrong height, so we adjust it.

Can my elderly mother use an Indian-style toilet after hip fracture surgery?

Usually not in the early weeks, because squatting needs deep hip and knee bending under load. A commode chair placed over the toilet, or a raised Western seat, is safer. Ask your surgeon about any hip movement limits, especially after a partial replacement.

How soon after discharge should the first home visit be?

Ideally within the first few days. Early visits catch problems like a wrongly set walker, a confusing weight-bearing order or a dangerous bathroom before they cause a fall. In Noida, visits run on scheduled routes, so call as soon as the discharge date is known.
