After spine surgery

Physiotherapy After Spine Surgery in Indirapuram

Spine surgery physiotherapy in Indirapuram that begins with home visits in the first weeks after a fusion, laminectomy or decompression, then moves to our Ahinsa Khand clinic for strengthening and return to work.

The operations this page covers

This page is for people who have had a spinal fusion, a laminectomy, a decompression for narrowed nerve canals, or screws and rods placed after a vertebral fracture or for scoliosis. If your operation was a discectomy or microdiscectomy for a slipped disc, recovery has a different shape (the worry there is the disc pushing out again, not bone knitting together), and our guide to rehab after slip disc surgery in Indirapuram will suit you better.

The split matters because the rules differ. After a fusion, the surgeon is waiting for bone to grow across the fixed levels, which takes months, so loading is cautious and twisting is usually limited for a long while. After a laminectomy without fusion, nothing has to turn into bone, and many people walk noticeably further within days. If you want the operations explained first, read about what a spinal fusion actually does and how a laminectomy takes pressure off the nerves.

How spine surgery physiotherapy in Indirapuram is staged

For most people the first one to three weeks happen at home. Sitting in a car is often the hardest position after spinal surgery, and a ride over a few speed breakers on the way to an appointment can undo a good morning. So the physiotherapist comes to you, watches how you get out of bed, checks how far you walk, looks at the bathroom, and shows the family how to help without hauling on your arms.

Once a 15 to 20 minute car ride feels manageable and the surgeon has seen you for the first follow-up, sessions shift to the clinic at Shipra Krishna Vista Plaza. From Vaishali, Vasundhara or Kaushambi that's a short trip. Some people switch in week three. Others aren't ready until week eight, and that's fine: multi-level fusion, older age and thin bones all tend to push the move later. Home sessions around Indirapuram carry on for anyone who needs longer.

What the clinic phase adds

Home sessions do a lot, but they run out of road. You can practise walking and gentle trunk control on a bedroom floor. What you can't easily do there is find out how your back copes with lifting a box from knee height, or build thigh strength on equipment where the load rises in small, known steps.

In the clinic the work changes character. The pieces below are chosen after assessment, and only once your surgeon allows more load:

  • Hip hinge practice, often with a stick held along the spine, so that bending comes from the hips rather than the operated levels
  • Leg strengthening on gym equipment, because strong thighs and hips are what let you lift without loading the back
  • Trunk endurance work using held positions, which tends to matter more for backs than fast repetitions
  • Stationary cycling and treadmill walking to rebuild stamina, with time and effort written down each visit
  • Lifting practice that copies your real day: a school bag, a bucket of clothes, a 20 litre water can only if that is genuinely your job at home

Some equipment stays switched off. We don't put a fused or freshly operated spine on spinal traction, and heat machines are used, if at all, for sore muscles away from a fully healed wound. More machines doesn't mean better rehab here. Most of the gain comes from exercise that is progressed carefully.

A rough timeline

Timelines depend on the operation and on your surgeon's protocol. Read these as a sketch, not a promise.

  • Weeks 0 to 2

At home. Log rolling in and out of bed, short walks spread through the day, breathing exercises, ankle movement, and learning which movements are restricted.

  • Weeks 2 to 6

Walking distance grows. Gentle deep abdominal and back muscle activation, longer sitting, dressing without bending through the spine. Many people start coming to the clinic.

  • Weeks 6 to 12

Clinic strengthening if cleared: legs, hips, trunk endurance, hip hinge. After a fusion the surgeon may review an X-ray before loading goes up.

  • 3 months onwards

Work tasks, longer travel, lifting practice, and a programme you can keep up on your own.

To see roughly where you are, try the spine surgery rehab stage calculator. Your surgeon's clearance overrides any chart.

Different goals after fusion and after decompression

After a fusion, the fixed segment stops moving, so the levels just above and below take more strain. That's why we spend real time on hip mobility and the upper back. Stiff hips force the lower back to bend in their place. The aim isn't flexibility for its own sake. It is spreading the work around the fused section.

After a decompression for spinal stenosis, people often arrive having walked stooped for years, because leaning forward gave the nerves room. The leg pain may have gone, but the habit hasn't. Goals here are walking upright for longer, opening the front of the hips, and getting back the calf and thigh strength that faded during years of short walks.

Fixation after a fall brings its own questions. Bone health, balance and the fear of falling again usually matter as much as the back, and the thinking overlaps with our page on rehab after fracture surgery in Indirapuram.

Working inside the surgeon's rules

We work from your discharge summary and operative notes. Most surgeons set rules on bending, lifting and twisting, on wearing a brace, and on when you can drive. We follow them exactly, even when you feel ready sooner. Feeling ready and the bone being ready are two different things after a fusion.

After each phase we send short progress notes so the surgeon can see what you manage at the next follow-up. If something doesn't fit the expected pattern, say new leg symptoms or pain that climbs week on week, we stop and ask rather than push. This sits within our wider post-surgical rehabilitation service, and if you've had other orthopaedic surgery too, the Indirapuram post-operative rehab overview lists every operation we cover.

Living further out? Families in Noida usually begin with home-based early recovery after spine surgery in Noida, and those along NH-58 with a weekly home plan after spine surgery in Raj Nagar Extension.

When to call the surgeon or an ambulance

Contact your surgeon the same day for fever, a wound that turns red, hot or starts to leak, or pain that suddenly becomes severe. Seek urgent care for a painful swollen calf, new weakness or numbness in the legs, or numbness around the groin and buttocks. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or losing control of the bladder or bowels needs an ambulance straight away: call 112 or 108.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Can I come to the clinic straight after I'm discharged?

Some people can, usually after a single-level decompression with a short hospital stay. The deciding factor is the car. If 15 to 20 minutes in a seat brings on pain or leg symptoms, home visits for the first week or two are the better trade, and the move to clinic happens when travel stops being the hardest part of the session.

Is gym equipment safe after a spinal fusion?

It can be, once the surgeon has cleared more loading, which for a fusion is often not before the six week review and sometimes later. Equipment lets us set loads in small, known steps, which is safer than guessing at home. We start well below what you think you can do and raise it only when the previous level caused no lasting flare.

Will exercise loosen the screws or rods?

Exercises are chosen to stay within what the surgeon has allowed, and the early ones put very little load through the fixed levels. The real risks to a healing fusion tend to be things like lifting something heavy too soon or a fall. If anything in your recovery worries the surgeon, we follow their instructions before continuing.

How often will I come to the clinic in the strengthening phase?

Two or three visits a week is common, with a home programme on the other days. The exact number depends on your goals and how you respond. Someone heading back to a desk job may need fewer visits than someone whose work involves lifting and long hours on their feet.

My surgeon called it a discectomy. Is this the right page?

Probably not. A discectomy removes the part of a disc pressing on a nerve, and its recovery revolves around sitting tolerance, nerve recovery and avoiding a second herniation. Fusion and laminectomy rehab has different priorities. Our slip disc surgery page for Indirapuram covers the discectomy path in detail.
