After fracture surgery

Physiotherapy After Fracture Surgery in Indirapuram

Physiotherapy after fracture surgery in Indirapuram for plates, nails and screws in any bone: early home visits while weight-bearing is restricted, then clinic sessions to rebuild strength, balance and everyday use.

The bone is fixed. The limb still has to recover.

A plate, a nail or a set of screws holds the broken ends in line so the bone can knit. It doesn't make the bone heal faster, and it does nothing for the muscles that were bruised by the injury, the joint that sat still for weeks, or the tendons that glued down around the incision. That's why someone can have a perfect X-ray at six weeks and still be unable to climb a step. Fracture rehabilitation works on two timelines at once: the bone's, set by your surgeon from the X-rays, and the soft tissue's, which we can influence directly.

Stiffness is the usual enemy. The joints on either side of a fracture lose movement fast when they're protected, and the older the patient, the faster it sets in. Early, permitted movement of those joints is often the single most useful thing physiotherapy does in the first weeks.

Which joints stiffen depends on the fracture. A plated wrist tends to take the fingers and the elbow down with it, because people hold the whole arm still out of caution. An ankle fixation stiffens the toes and the big calf muscles. A thigh-bone nail can leave the knee reluctant to bend for weeks. We check these neighbouring joints at the first session, since they're often easier to rescue than the fractured area itself.

What your weight-bearing instruction means

For leg fractures, the surgeon's weight-bearing order decides almost everything we do. Non-weight-bearing means the foot doesn't take any load at all. Touch or toe-touch weight-bearing lets the foot rest on the floor for balance only. Partial weight-bearing allows a set amount, sometimes given as a fraction of body weight, and weight-bearing as tolerated means the fixation is strong enough for you to use pain as the guide. These orders change as healing shows on X-ray, so we check them at every follow-up. The partial weight-bearing calculator helps if you've been given a percentage, and a bathroom scale is a surprisingly good training tool for learning what that load feels like.

The first weeks: home visits while you're on a frame or crutches

Straight after discharge, most people with a fixed hip, femur, tibia or ankle fracture are safer at home. Getting into a car with a non-weight-bearing leg is hard, and a fall in a parking lot is the last thing a fresh fixation needs. Home visits cover safe walking with the right aid, bed and toilet transfers, circulation exercises, swelling control and early movement of the joints near the fracture. Families in our clinic's own neighbourhood can read how home physiotherapy in Indirapuram is arranged.

Arm fractures are different. Someone with a plated wrist or elbow can often walk into the clinic within days, and many do, because short trips from Vaishali, Vasundhara and Kaushambi are easy and the clinic has more to offer for hand and grip work.

Fracture surgery physiotherapy in Indirapuram, by injury

Each fracture has its own sticking points, which is why the plan is written after assessment rather than taken from a sheet.

  • Hip fracture fixation or partial replacement, usually in older adults: getting up and walking early, preventing chest infection and pressure areas, and reducing the risk of the next fall.
  • Ankle fractures fixed with plates and screws: swelling that lingers for months, a calf that wastes quickly, and balance that needs specific retraining.
  • Wrist fractures with a plate: finger stiffness if the hand is not used, forearm rotation (turning a key, opening a jar) and grip strength.
  • Kneecap fractures with wiring: a brace and limits on how far the knee may bend, and a thigh muscle that is slow to switch back on.

The clinic phase: rebuilding strength and confidence

Once the surgeon confirms enough healing and the weight-bearing order relaxes, the work changes from protecting the limb to loading it. This is where the clinic does what home visits can't. We use gym equipment for graded leg strengthening, step boxes of different heights, space to practise walking without the frame, and balance work on surfaces that challenge the ankle safely. For arm fractures there is graded grip and forearm loading, and paraffin wax for a stiff hand before mobilisation.

Progress is measured, not guessed. We check joint angles with a goniometer, compare thigh or calf strength side to side, and time functional tests such as standing up from a chair. Those numbers decide when you drop the stick, start stairs with a normal pattern or return to work. Between sessions you continue with a home set taken from our post-fracture exercise guide, adjusted to your stage.

How long it takes, honestly

Bone union is commonly measured in weeks to a few months, depending on the bone, the fracture pattern, age, smoking and conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis. Function often takes longer than union. A rough estimate for your situation is available from the fracture recovery estimator, but the real timeline comes from your surgeon's review and how your limb responds to loading.

If the fracture was around the shoulder, the shoulder's own stiffness problems apply as well; see shoulder rehabilitation at the Indirapuram clinic. For the wider picture across operations, our post-surgery rehabilitation service page explains how we coordinate with surgeons. When to call the surgeon or an ambulance

Contact the surgeon promptly if the wound turns red, swollen or starts discharging, if you develop a fever, or if pain suddenly becomes severe or the limb looks out of shape after a fall. Toes or fingers that go pale, blue, cold or numb need same-day review. A painful, swollen calf can signal a clot and needs urgent medical attention. For sudden breathlessness or chest pain, call 112 or 108 immediately.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Will the plate or screws limit what I can do later?

Most people return to normal daily activity with the metal in place. Some feel the plate under the skin near the ankle or wrist, especially in cold weather or with tight footwear. Whether it is ever removed is a decision for your surgeon. Rehabilitation goals are set by your function, not by the metalwork.

Why is my ankle still swollen months after the operation?

Swelling after ankle fixation often persists for months, worse in the evening and after long standing. It reflects disturbed circulation and lymph drainage around the injury, not usually a problem with the fixation. Elevation, calf pumping and gradual loading help. New swelling with redness, heat or calf pain is different and needs medical review.

Can I go straight to the clinic after an arm fracture?

Often yes. If you can walk normally and travel is comfortable, a wrist, elbow or forearm fracture can usually be treated at the clinic from the start. A home visit may still help in the first days if the person is elderly, lives alone or needs help planning daily tasks one-handed.

Does osteoporosis change fracture rehabilitation?

It can. Weaker bone may mean more cautious weight-bearing orders, and fractures from low falls often point to a fall risk that needs its own attention. We add balance and leg strength work and look at home hazards. Bone treatment itself is for your doctor to decide.

How often should I come to the clinic once I am walking?

Two to three sessions a week is typical in the strengthening phase, with a home programme on other days. As strength and walking improve, visits reduce. The schedule depends on your goals, for example returning to stairs at home versus returning to a physical job.
