Physiotherapy After Ligament Surgery in Indirapuram

Ligament surgery physiotherapy in Indirapuram for PCL, MCL, LCL, multi-ligament knee, ankle, elbow and thumb repairs, starting at home and moving to our clinic for the strength and control that protect the repair.

Which repairs this page covers

Ligament surgery is a broad label. Here we mean repairs and reconstructions other than the ACL: the posterior cruciate (PCL), the collateral ligaments on the inner and outer knee (MCL and LCL), knees where several ligaments were damaged together, lateral ankle ligament reconstruction, and smaller repairs at the elbow and thumb. If your operation was an ACL reconstruction, our ACL rehab page for Indirapuram is the better guide. Shoulder stabilisation after a dislocation is a ligament operation too, but its rehab is specific enough to have its own page on shoulder surgery rehab.

What these repairs share is that a stitched or rebuilt ligament stays weak for months while it matures. Early rehab protects it. Later rehab trains the muscles around the joint to take up load the ligament used to carry on its own.

PCL and collateral repairs train differently

The PCL stops the shin bone sliding backwards under the thigh. After a PCL reconstruction, gravity becomes a problem: lying on your back with the knee bent, the shin sags back and stretches the graft. Surgeons often use a brace with a pad behind the calf, and early hamstring strengthening is usually held back because the hamstrings pull the shin in that same direction. Quadriceps work, on the other hand, is encouraged early. The PCL injury page covers the injury itself.

Collateral repairs are about sideways stress. After an MCL repair, anything that pushes the knee inward (stepping across your body, swinging out of a car with the knees together) loads the repair, so a hinged brace often limits the range for a while. The LCL is the mirror image. The MCL injury guide explains how these tears usually happen.

Multi-ligament knee surgery stacks the restrictions of each repair on top of one another. It moves more slowly and needs close contact with the surgeon at every stage.

Ankle, elbow and thumb ligament repairs

Lateral ankle ligament reconstruction is usually done for an ankle that keeps giving way after repeated sprains. That means the rehab target is more than healing: it's restoring the balance reflexes that failed in the first place. We avoid stretching the foot into the turned-in position that strains the repair until the surgeon allows it. The chronic ankle instability page and our ankle surgery rehab in Indirapuram are both worth reading if this is you.

At the elbow, the ulnar collateral ligament on the inner side is repaired in throwing athletes and after some dislocations. The thumb's ulnar collateral ligament (the one torn when the thumb is forced backwards, sometimes called skier's thumb) is repaired and then protected in a splint. Both need careful, graded hand and arm work, and grip strength often returns more slowly than people expect.

Ligament surgery physiotherapy in Indirapuram: from home to the clinic

For knee and ankle repairs the first two to four weeks usually happen at home. You're in a brace or boot, possibly keeping weight off the leg, and a car journey isn't worth the swelling it causes. Our Indirapuram home visit service covers that period with the portable kit: muscle stimulation, cold packs, bands and walking aids, plus training for whoever is helping at home.

Once you're more mobile, sessions move to the clinic in Ahinsa Khand. From Vaishali, Vasundhara or Kaushambi it's a short drive. Elbow and thumb repairs often come straight to the clinic from the start, since walking isn't affected.

What clinic sessions add

The later phase is where a repaired ligament gets its long-term protection, and that comes from strength and control in the muscles around it. At the clinic we have gym equipment for graded leg and arm loading, balance boards and unstable surfaces for knee and ankle control, and space for the side-stepping, cutting and landing drills that collateral and ankle repairs eventually need. Wax bath sessions, available only at the clinic, can make a stiff hand or ankle easier to move before exercise.

Each step up is checked against two things: what the surgeon's protocol allows at that point, and how the joint behaved after the last progression. If anything in your protocol doesn't make sense, ask; explaining it is part of our post-surgical rehab service.

Recovery in four broad phases

  • Protection

Brace, splint or boot as prescribed. Swelling control, gentle permitted movement, and keeping the rest of the limb and body strong.

  • Restoring movement

Range increases within the surgeon's limits and weight-bearing builds as allowed. Most knee and ankle patients switch to clinic sessions around here.

  • Strength and control

Progressive loading on equipment, balance work, closed-chain exercises, and grip and forearm work for hand repairs.

  • Return to function

Sport, heavy work, or tasks like sitting cross-legged or climbing a ladder, brought back in stages and agreed with your surgeon.

Timeframes differ widely between a thumb repair and a multi-ligament knee, so we haven't put weeks on these phases. Your surgeon's protocol sets the clock.

When to call the surgeon or an ambulance

Get in touch with your surgeon quickly if you notice fever, redness or discharge at the wound, pain that suddenly becomes severe, or new numbness, tingling or weakness beyond the operated joint. A swollen, painful calf after knee or ankle surgery needs checking the same day because of the risk of a clot. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain means calling 112 or 108 for an ambulance immediately.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not allowed to do hamstring curls after PCL surgery?

The hamstrings pull the shin bone backwards, which is exactly the movement the PCL is meant to block. While the new graft matures, strong hamstring contractions can stretch it. Surgeons usually delay resisted hamstring work for a period and bring it back carefully. Follow your own protocol, because timings differ between surgeons and operations.

Will my knee feel loose after an MCL repair?

Some sense of insecurity is common early on, partly because the brace has been doing the work and the muscles around the knee have lost tone. It usually improves as strength and balance return. A knee that genuinely gives way, or feels looser than it did a week ago, should be checked by your surgeon rather than trained through.

Do you see thumb and elbow ligament repairs at the clinic?

Yes. These are usually handled at the clinic from the start, because walking isn't affected and hand work benefits from grip tools and the wax bath. We work from the splint instructions and movement limits in your surgeon's notes and build grip and pinch strength gradually.

How do I know when I'm ready to stop sessions?

When you can do the things that matter to you (sport, work, stairs, squatting) without pain, swelling or giving way, and strength in the operated limb is close to the other side. We usually taper to a few spaced-out reviews rather than stopping suddenly, and the surgeon's final review settles it.
