After ligament surgery

Physiotherapy After Ligament Surgery in Noida

Ligament surgery physiotherapy in Noida for the first weeks home: braces, splints and boots in a high-rise flat, with home visits on scheduled sector slots and practical training for the family member helping you.

Coming home in a brace, splint or boot

After a knee, ankle, elbow or thumb ligament repair you usually leave hospital with something holding the joint still: a hinged knee brace locked at a set angle, a walking boot, a plaster backslab or a thumb splint. Each one changes how you sleep, wash and move around the flat, and getting those basics right is most of what the first week is about.

This page covers repairs other than the ACL, meaning PCL, MCL and LCL repairs, multi-ligament knees, lateral ankle ligament reconstruction, and elbow or thumb ligament repairs. If yours was an ACL operation, use our ACL rehab guide for Noida instead.

Living with a locked knee brace in a tower flat

A locked brace keeps the knee straight, which makes ordinary things awkward. Sitting on a normal sofa sticks the leg out across the room. Getting into a lift means turning sideways. The car ride to follow-up appointments needs the back seat, with you sitting across it.

  • Bed height: when you sit on the edge, knees roughly level with hips is a good target. Too low and standing on one leg is a struggle; too high and swinging a straight leg in is hard.
  • After PCL surgery: the surgeon may want the calf supported so the shin doesn't sag backwards. A pillow under the calf, not behind the knee, is the usual arrangement, and we'll check yours.
  • Bathroom: a shower stool, a non-slip mat, and a waterproof cover for the brace or boot if the surgeon allows showering.
  • Toilet: a western commode or a raised seat. Squatting is off the table for now.

If the repair was on your elbow or thumb

Upper-limb ligament repairs don't stop you walking, but they make you one-handed for a while, and that's harder than it sounds. Buttoning a shirt, chopping vegetables, holding the phone and the lift rail at the same time. Early visits focus on keeping the shoulder and free fingers moving (stiff fingers are a common and avoidable problem after a thumb splint), managing swelling with the hand raised, and setting up one-handed routines. The elbow, wrist and hand exercise page gives an idea of the movements that come later.

What the first home visits cover

The first session runs longer. We go through the discharge summary and operative notes, confirm the brace or splint settings and weight-bearing instructions, check swelling and circulation, and teach safe walking with the right aid. Then we write the plan for the next couple of weeks.

After that, sessions of about 45 to 60 minutes cover what the repair allows: muscle activation (the portable muscle stimulator helps when the thigh won't contract inside a brace), permitted range of motion, strength work for everything not in the brace, and walking practice in the corridor. The attendant learns transfers and how to refit the brace correctly, because a brace that has slipped down the leg protects nothing. If personal care is too much for the family, nursing help at home after an operation can run alongside.

Early milestones, by repair

  • PCL reconstruction

Calf supported, quadriceps work early, hamstring loading delayed, brace kept on as instructed. The PCL injury guide explains why gravity matters so much here.

  • MCL or LCL repair

Hinged brace with range opened in stages, and care to avoid sideways stress when turning in the kitchen or getting out of the car. See the MCL tear explainer for background.

  • Multi-ligament knee

The slowest and most restricted, often with a long period of limited weight-bearing and close follow-up with the surgeon.

  • Ankle ligament reconstruction

Boot or cast, elevation, toe and knee movement, then gradual weight-bearing with the turned-in position protected. Our ankle surgery rehab in Noida page covers boots in more depth.

  • Elbow or thumb repair

Splint care, finger and shoulder movement, then graded motion and grip once the surgeon gives the go-ahead.

Ligament surgery physiotherapy in Noida: visit slots and evenings

Home visits across Noida run on scheduled slots, so travel is planned properly instead of rushed between sectors. Our regular areas include sectors 62, 63, 71, 72, 75, 76, 121 and 137, and Noida Extension; home physiotherapy across Noida has the full picture. Evening slots go quickly because that's when working family members are home to learn transfers, so book a day ahead where you can.

When to call the surgeon or an ambulance

Phone your surgeon promptly about fever, a wound that is red, hot or leaking, sudden severe pain, or a hand or foot that turns numb, pale or weak. In a brace or splint, also check for swelling that makes it suddenly tight. Calf pain or swelling after a knee or ankle repair needs a same-day medical check. For sudden breathlessness or chest pain, call 112 or 108 for an ambulance.

When clinic sessions become worthwhile

Once you're out of the locked brace or boot, walking reasonably and able to manage a car journey, the later strength and balance work is often better done at our Indirapuram clinic with gym equipment and space to train. Some Noida families split it: home visits on weekdays, a clinic session on Saturday. The clinic phase of ligament rehab in Indirapuram page explains what that looks like, and our approach to keeping ligament rehab moving between visits has ideas for the home programme. The wider post-operative rehabilitation service covers other operations we support.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Your physiotherapy is planned after an in-person assessment and works alongside the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Recovery differs from person to person, so no timeline or result on this page is a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the brace off to sleep?

Only if your surgeon says so. Many protocols keep a knee brace on at night in the early weeks because you can't control the joint while asleep. If it's uncomfortable at night, we can check the fit and strap positions, which often solves the problem, and pass any concerns to the surgeon.

My fingers are stiff in the thumb splint. Is that normal?

Some stiffness is expected, but fingers that aren't inside the splint should still move fully. If they're getting stiffer, puffy or discoloured, raise it early. Keeping the hand above heart level and moving the free fingers several times a day usually helps. Numbness, colour change or severe pain needs the surgeon.

Is it safe for my elderly parent to help with transfers?

It depends on their own strength and balance. We teach a method where the helper guards and steadies rather than lifts. If the only person at home can't do that safely, we'll suggest alternatives such as a different bed arrangement, a walker, or nursing support for the first week or two.

How many home visits a week will I need in Noida?

That's set after the first assessment. Early on, while the routine is new and brace settings change, more frequent visits help; as you become independent they drop. Indicative pricing, confirmed when you book: Rs 800 to 1,200 a session, weekly plans of 6 visits from Rs 4,500 and monthly plans of 24 from Rs 16,000.
